26) The people of Israel (3)
Romans 11:1-36
She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” (Matt 1:21)
Has God rejected His people?
By no means! (verse 1)
For I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin. (verse 1)
“Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life.” (verse 3)
“I have kept for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” (verse 4)
What then? Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking. The elect obtained it, but the rest were hardened (verse 7)
Has Israel fallen too far?
By no means (verse 11)
Rather, through their trespass salvation has come to the Gentiles, so as to make Israel jealous. Now if their trespass means riches for the world, and if their failure means riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their full inclusion mean! (vs 11-12)
For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. (verse 12)
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise. (Gal 3:28-29)
And in this way all Israel will be saved (v. 26)
Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!
For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?”
Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?”
For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.
