Family of Christ

Matthew 12:46-50

But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son,  born of woman, born under the law  (Galatians 4:4)

And when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, but supposing him to be in the group they went a day's journey, but then they began to search for him among their relatives and acquaintances, and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching for him. (Luke 2:43-45)

And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?” (Luke 2:49)

1. His earthly family

At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry, and they began to pluck heads of grain and to eat. (verse 1)

And all the people were amazed, and said, “Can this be the Son of David?”  (verse 23)

While he was still speaking to the people, behold, his mother and his brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him.  (verse 46)

She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21)

2. His heavenly family

But he replied to the man who told him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?”  (verse 48)

And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! (verse 49)

For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”    (verse 50)

See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. (1 Jn 3:1)

But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. (Jn 1:12-13)

The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.  (Romans 8:16-17)

For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” (verse 50)
