8) The Command Issued

Acts 4:1-22

Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ,  the Son of the living God.” And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock  I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.  Matthew 16:16-17

“Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” Luke 22:31-32

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, eeking someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:8

Opposition

And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them, greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. Acts 4:1-2

But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand. Acts 4:4

Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance. Luke 15:7

greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. Acts 4:2

And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. Acts 4:3

“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:10

Question

On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem, with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. Acts 4:5-6

“By what power or by what name did you do this?” Acts 4:7

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit Matthew 28:18-19

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders, Acts 4:9

whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by him this man is standing before you well. This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. Acts 4:10-11

with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas Acts 4:6

First they led him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people. John 18:13-13

The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is the LORD's doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.  Psalm 118:22-23

And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6

Perception

Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus. Acts 4:13

Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation. 1 Peter 2:12

But seeing the man who was healed standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition.  Acts 4:14

But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.” Acts 4:19-20
