April 2019

Dear friends

Welcome back to Pandas. The holidays have flown by and the team have been busy celebrating Easter here at Pantiles Baptist Church. Frances, who does the flower arrangements in the church and entrance hall, has made some beautiful creations to remind us that Easter is about celebrating new life in Jesus. As well as meeting up with friends and family, we all seem to have enjoyed the odd chocolate egg too.

As the Summer term begins, we are all looking forward to the warmer weather and Pandas is no exception. We will be using the outdoor space for sand and water trays as soon as we can.

Andy and I have spent the holidays in Cornwall with the family and loved creating special memories with the grandchildren. A busy, noisy holiday but such fun.

Arthur, at five and a half years old, was keen to listen to stories but was also happy to make up stories as he played. Maeve who is eighteen months old loved snuggling up listening to stories and was happy to ‘read’ books herself, often repeating some of the text in her own way. They were obviously at very different levels of understanding but the thing that really fascinated me was their joy, concentration and interaction with books. This has inspired me to review the book corner and each week I will introduce you to an Author in the hopes that you too may find some books to inspire your little ones.

This Term

Tanya, Laura and I get together each term to plan a selection of activities, crafts and stories which will appeal to all ages. We revisit concepts and skills-based activities to help children understand and develop at their level. If we have done an activity before you may find your child will approach it differently this time so it’s always worth having a go at the activities again.

Our focus for the first half of term will be stories, and in particular, ‘Stories Jesus told.’ The stories will be interactive and I hope you will encourage your little ones to join in. By joining in as an adult, you will make stories more fun and relevant for the children. I am a keen believer that reading and writing should be fun and age-appropriate so hopefully you will get some helpful hints on how to make these activities stress-free and great learning opportunities no matter how old your child.

The theme for the second half term will be ‘Our Body’. We’ll start by learning to identify parts of our body and give them names before looking at actions and how body language gives clues as to how we feel. We’ve lined up some fun stories and songs to help the children learn.

Each week the crafts, stories and songs are designed to make sure the Pandas session is full of fun and there is plenty of learning going on. Don’t forget to take the craft home as this can be used as a reminder of what we have covered at Pandas and as a talking point to reinforce learning.

Daddy and Me

Just a reminder that Daddy and Me, our toddler group, run by dads and especially designed for dads to enjoy some time with their little ones, starts up again this term. We meet in the hall on the second Saturday of the month during term time, between 10:00 and 11:30. It’s run on similar lines to Pandas, and while the children enjoy sharing their experiences with Dad it is a great opportunity for you to have some time to yourself away from the little ones.

Pop In Coffee Bar

We have created a place where you can enjoy coffee (hot chocolate or tea) and conversation, while your children have their space to play – rather than worrying about them being bored and having to gulp down a coffee! The Church hall will be open to young and old to enjoy coffee, so why not Pop In after an early shop, fuel up before the rest of the day, or simply meet friends and enjoy time together!

I know that at the end of this term, or even throughout this term, some of you will be leaving Pandas for pastures new. We would love to say a proper goodbye, so please let us know if you are moving on.

Pantiles Pandas wants to meet the needs of the community and we are grateful for your support. If there is anything you would like us to tackle in the sessions or if you just want to chat and share some of the issues of raising children, then we would love to hear from you.

With Love
