January 2019

Dear friends

The Pandas team would like to wish you and your family a Happy New Year and we hope you will enjoy all the things we have planned this term. It has been great to spend time with families and friends over the holiday and the celebrations at Pantiles Baptist Church have helped remind us about the true meaning of Christmas.

Tanya and I felt a little ‘flat’ as we were putting the Christmas decorations away but with Pandas starting this week, we are looking forward to what the new year will bring and catching up on all your news.

Pop In

Our first Pop In coffee bar of 2019 will be on Saturday 26 January. 10.00-11.30am.

We have created a place where you can enjoy barista coffee (hot chocolate or tea) and conversation, while children have their space to play – rather than worrying about them being bored and having to gulp down a coffee! A family friendly place to chill.

The Church will be open to young and old to enjoy coffee, so why not pop in after an early shop, fuel up before the rest of the day, or simply meet friends and enjoy time together!

This Term

We have loved organising this term’s programme and our theme for the first half term is ‘Letters’. We’ll start by learning to recognise letters and their sounds then introduce the idea of writing. There will be hints on how you can help children of all ages and we have lined up some fun stories and songs to help the children learn. There will be alphabet based activities to try out on the playdoh table, jigsaw table and in the craft area too.

After half term we will start to focus on ‘Animals’. We will be recognising and naming animals in our stories as well as identifying the sounds they make. The craft activities will give lots of opportunity to help the children develop their hand eye co-ordination as well as their concentration.

During Singing Time we’ll be introducing some music and movement activities which, with your help, even the youngest baby can join in and enjoy. We aim to make each session fun and full of learning opportunities.

What to look for….

Keep an eye out for the changes in the book corner. There will be new books this term to reinforce what we’re talking about in the sessions. After Story Time you’ll find the story we’ve told on the book shelf along with other stories related to the theme. We’ll show you books to help your child develop their pre-reading skills as well as books to take them on to the next stage of their reading journey.

Daddy and Me

Just a reminder that Daddy and Me, our toddler group especially designed for dads to enjoy some time with their little ones starts up again this term. This is run along the lines of Pandas with the usual toys and activities going on throughout the session. We meet in the hall on the second Saturday of the month during term time, between 10:00 and 11:30. It’s run on similar lines to Pandas, except dads have croissants for snacks!

This is a great opportunity for dads to meet up with other dads and chat over barista coffee as well as spend quality time with their little ones. The added bonus is some ‘you time’ and maybe a little peace and quiet for mums.

I know that at the end of this term, or even throughout this term, some of you will be leaving Pandas for pastures new. We would love to say a proper goodbye, so please let us know if you are moving on.

We are here to help and would welcome your comments on how the group is run.  If there is anything you would like us to tackle, or if you just want to chat and share some of the issues of raising children, then we would love to hear from you.

With Love

Jan Hannan

Dates for your Diary…….

12 January                Daddy and Me

18 January                Fish & Chip Quiz night

This is great fun and a good opportunity to chill with friends and use the old ‘grey matter’ without the children in tow. You do not have to be of Mastermind or The Chase ability or even have an expertise in any particular area to take part. Last year we made a creditable attempt at the quiz and really enjoyed having time to chat together   We would like to have a Pandas team or two so if you are able to come just let Jan or Tanya know.
